About Afrozensus

In Germany there are over one million people of African origin.

Until now, there was hardly any other statistical data on this group.

The #AFROZENSUS is changing that.

But what is this data for?

Closing the data gap

Until now, Germany has lacked reliable data on the realities, experiences and perspectives of Black, African and Afrodiasporic people. With the Afrozensus survey, we have closed this data gap and created a sound basis for political and social measures. For example, the report ‘Racism in Germany’ by the Federal Anti-Racism Commissioner refers to the results of the Afrozensus.

Making discrimination visible

Many Black, African and Afro-diasporic people experience everyday and structural racism, but these experiences are often denied and not systematically recorded. In the Afrozensus, we document and address experiences of discrimination.

“Polizeikontrolle”

Focusing on Black perspectives

Previous university research, if it has been done at all, has usually only talked about Black people. In the Afrozensus, Black, African and Afrodiasporic people themselves have their say and share their experiences, perspectives and demands. For example, which designations they choose for themselves.

“Selbstpositionierung”

Promoting empowerment and community building

The Afrozensus goes far beyond data collection. It is designed by communities for the communities and serves as a platform for networking and exchange between Black, African and Afrodiasporic people. The results of the Afrozensus help us to better understand our communities and to better protect marginalised groups within our communities.

Driving political and social change

By collecting tangible data, we use the Afrozensus to provide decision-makers, institutions and organisations with the data they need to take targeted action to improve the living conditions of Black, African and Afrodiasporic people in Germany and to help fight anti-Black racism.

Who is behind the Afrozensus survey?

The Afrozensus survey 2020 was a cooperation project between Each One Teach One (EOTO) e.V. and Citizens For Europe gUG. The Alice Salomon University of Applied Sciences and the German Centre for Integration and Migration Research provided scientific support for the survey. The project was funded by the Federal Anti-Discrimination Agency from 2019 to 2021. The first version of the homepage was funded by the Federal Ministry for Family Affairs, Senior Citizens, Women and Youth as part of Demokratie leben!, while the current, revised version with English translation was funded by the Zentrum für Data-driven Empowerment, Leadership und Advocacy (zedela) gUG. The website is operated by EOTO (see imprint).
